The Lord Reading Law Society held a Gala Tribute to Irwin Cotler on Wednesday May 25, 2016. The event was a huge success, with record attendance.
This gala dinner, attended by over 600 people, including five of the nine justices of the Supreme Court of Canada, featured guest speakers
- Professor Alan Dershowitz of Harvard Law School
- Justice Rosalie Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada
- Justice Nicholas Kasirer of the Quebec Court of Appeal
paying tribute to the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, long-time Member of Parliament, McGill University law professor and human rights champion of worldwide renown, the Honourable Irwin Cotler, who delivered the keynote address.
Master of Ceremonies was Raphaël Schachter.
Video greetings were delivered by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Letters of tribute were read from former Prime Minister Paul Martin and Hillel Neuer of Geneva-based UN Watch.
In addition, the evening featured the transition of the Lord Reading Law Society presidency from Steven Slimovitch to Larry Markowitz.
Co-chairs of the organizing committee were Casper Bloom and Theodore Goloff.
